A Community Restaurant
Marjorie opened in the Central District of Seattle in October 2024, and this restaurant will forever be at the top of our list – not only for the exceptional menu (which you can read about here, here, and here). The restaurant also holds a special place in our hearts because of owner Donna Moodie and the community she builds everywhere she goes. It was objekts’ privilege to be a piece of the community that brought this iteration of Marjorie to life, along with SkB Architects, Matter Contract, and Hightower.
Midtown Station is Marjorie’s third location over Donna’s 30-year career as “an influential figure in the Seattle food scene.”1 The first location in Belltown is where objekts owner Doug McKenzie first visited, he was one of the consultants on the design for the second location in Capitol Hill, and when it was time for the Central District location, Donna trusted objekts to take her vision for community and hospitality and translate it into furniture.
Choosing a Furniture Partner
With Donna’s investment in climate-forward choices for Marjorie including locally sourced food and state-of-the-art electric appliances, the furniture design needed to meet high standards. Hightower’s B Corp status and their many sustainability initiatives made them an excellent furniture partner for Marjorie. Todd Johnson, Hightower’s Pacific Northwest representative, acted as guide through Hightower’s offerings, highlighting pieces that would fit hospitality needs. Natalie Hartkopf, co-founder of Hightower, was especially drawn to the project for its community-building spirit, seeing Marjorie as a space that could bring the neighborhood together.At Marjorie, guests can lounge in Hightower’s Proto and Flote while selecting the next record to spin and order cocktails while seated in the Hari barstools.
Stand-Out Details
One of the architectural elements brought to life by the team at SkB Architects is the steel and glass partition that can be closed for a private party or opened up to the rest of the restaurant, simultaneously allowing light and privacy.
Monochromatic, burgundy café tables elaborate on the eye-catching wallpaper and have the added advantage of flexibility as 2-top tables or being pushed together for a large group. Each furniture choice prioritizes hospitality through flexibility, ease of cleaning, and design cohesion.
For Doug, it’s the indoor/outdoor connection that is especially inviting in the spring and summer seasons.
